In his essay I am going to show how the writers build up mystery and suspense by looking at four short stories that have been written by † Guy de Maupasant, Edgar Allan Poe and Charles dickens†. In the fist short story I read † a vendetta† what happens is an old lady lives with her so in a little town and one night the son gets killed by a man called Nicolas ravioli then the mum who is a widow and only has the sons dog as a friend. She keeps shut up with the body and then she swears vengeance on to the body. But for months she cant think of anything but then one night she thinks of it she trains the dog to be a killer and makes it bite the neck of the victim then she takes the dog to were the killer lives and the dog kills him on her command. In the second story â€Å"the necklace† it is about a girl which dreams of being rich and have bountiful clothes but she is from a poor family so she marries a civil servant one day he comes home with tickets to a fancy ball at his work but she don’t want to go because she would have nothing to wear so he gives here 400 francs to bye a dress so she goes out and byes the best dress she can find then she has nothing to wear as jewelry so she goes to her rich friend and she lends her a bountiful necklace she goes to the ball and has the best night of there life but than when she gets home she finds she has lost the necklace the they have to replace it for a lot of money even thou they are very poor so she replaces it and has to work 10 long years to pay for it then she talks to her friend and tells her all that has happened and she finds out that it was a fake. In the third essay â€Å"the tell tale heart† there is a man that tells a story about a man who has a problem his boss has and evil eye and this eye really bugs him so he spy’s on him every night and then one night he goes in and kills the old man with the evil eye then he cuts up the man and he berries him under the floor boards then some police inspectors come around and he sits right above the body and then as time goes on he hears the heart of the old man but it is his own then he goes mad and he admits to killing him. In the fourth story † a confession found in a prison† is a story about a man that has a wife his wife’s sister is married to his brother and his wife’s sister has and evil look but one day she has a son and she dyes on holiday then his brother dies so they take in the child but the kid has got the same evil look passed down by the mother so he gets really bugged by it so one day when his wife goes on holiday the man kills the child and berries him in the back garden then he puts grass over him then some police come around and they talk to him in the garden he sits right above the body then the tell him they have some dogs to find the child then the dogs come running in and start sniffing around the ground where he is sitting then they make him move and they dg up he body then he admits it and gets put into prison. In the first story the best bit of suspense is when the lady is trying to teach the dog how to kill. The best bit of suspense in the second story is when they find out that she has gone and lost the necklace. The best bit of suspense in the third story is when he keeps going in at night and looking at the old man when he sleeps. The best bit of suspense in the fourth story is when he finds out that the little child has got the stare that his mum has. I think the best bit of suspense in all of the stories is in last story is that when he berries the body and the gardeners come and put grass on top of the body and he thinks that they will find the body. In the end I think all of the stories have lots of suspense in them but vendetta was my favorite because it has suspense murder in it and they are the types of stories that I like. I think they are all very good and they all show mystery and suspense.

Feelings towards Essay

All throughout this scene there are various indications about the rising tension caused by Eddie’s feelings towards his niece – Catherine. It begins when Eddie confronts Rodolfo about taking advantage of Beatrice and not treating Eddie with respect. ‘I know, but in your own town you wouldn’t just drag off some girl, without permission’. Here he is highlighting the lack of respect he feels that Rodolfo treats him with. He is referring to Beatrice as ‘some girl’, which shows that in Eddie’s eyes Rodolfo does not see Beatrice as anything special or important. Beatrice (Eddies wife) suspects that Eddie’s feelings towards Catherine are un-natural and contributes throughout this scene to the rise in tension. ‘Well he didn’t exactly drag her off though, Eddie’. This would annoy Eddie, as he is not receiving any support, she is also saying that Catherine is independent and chose to go with Rodolfo which would raise tension further. When Eddie tells Rodolfo that he is simply her uncle, Beatrice pounces on this and retorts â€Å"Well then, be an uncle then†. The others would take this at face value, however Beatrice is referring to Eddie’s un-natural affection for Catherine, which will shock Eddie. Marco then issues a challenge to Eddie, asking him to say what Rodolfo has done wrong. Eddie says that Catherine was never out on the street till twelve o’clock at night before Rodolfo came. Marco instantly tells Rodolfo that he must come home early now. By saying this Marco has eliminated the supposed problem, which leaves Eddie with no problem in which he can camouflage his jealousy. Now that Eddie has no more problems but has a dented ego. He begins to create new problems, however he disguises them so that these problems are perceived as concern for Rodolfo; ‘I mean suppose he gets hit by a car, where’s his papers, who is he, you know what I mean? ‘ Beatrice states that the same risk is generated during the day when he is at work. Here we see that Eddie is ‘holding back a voice full of anger’ almost like a car revving up. This simple action is showing the rise in tension as a result of Eddie’s problem. Eddie now retreats to his rocking chair, showing that he is fighting a losing battle. As Eddie is reading his paper, awkwardness is felt in the room. Catherine reacts by putting the record ‘Paper Doll’ on; the title in itself indicates the song content. Then Catherine is overcome with rebellion/revolt and asks Rodolfo to dance, causing Eddie to freeze and feel uncomfortable. Rodolfo realises this and refuses to dance however Beatrice and Catherine soon persuade him. As Eddie burns a hole through Rodolfo’s back he asks, â€Å"What’s this, a new record? † Eddie has heard this song many times before, however he is no hearing it through new ears, new jealous ears. When Marco reveals that Rodolfo is a very good cook, Eddie finds this amusing and mockingly says, â€Å"It’s wonderful. He sings, he cooks, he could make dresses. † Thus making another dig at Rodolfo, implying that he has homosexual tendencies. Rodolfo mistakenly takes this as a compliment and smiles thankfully. This is another opportunity for Eddie to put Rodolfo down and he says that he should not be working on the boats but instead working in a dress shop. Yet again he phrases it so that it may be perceived as a compliment. During this speech he unconsciously twists his newspaper into a tight roll, which gives an insight into his somewhat angered/resentful thoughts and also symbolises the rise in tension.

If we look at the issue of political divisiveness in the United States with the idea in mind that all politics are local, Mike Gates is probably correct in his assessment that the issue is ignorance and people who are too aware of their own opinions. Former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor might agree. Gates is a city council member in the small community of West Linn, Oregon, who did not run for re-election because of what he views as a a growing divide within his own community (2008). His reason, he said, is simple. â€Å"There are just too many people engaging in pure political fantasy. They have accumulated to a point where no one could possibly respond to all the nonsense,† (Gates 2008). In the West Linn case, the issue is one of the government’s ability to provide all the desired services that the city residents are demanding and how exactly the government should fund these services (2008). On a larger scale, this is the same debate that faces the nation as a whole. Many people believe that the United States government should solve all the country’s ills, from global warming and poor economy to the lack of health care. Those who believe that it is the government’s responsibility to assure that all men remain equal and therefore have exactly the same things also believe that to make sure everyone has their needs met, we should take from the rich and give to the poor. On the extreme other side of the coin, we have Americans who believe that a person should take individual responsibility for their own needs and not rely on the government. These people oppose higher taxes to pay for anything. It is a fundamental difference of opinion that has lead to a deeply divided country. This is the divide Gates observes within his community. The people want West Linn to provide more services, but do not want higher property taxes to pay for those services. Complicating the issue is the question of religious freedom versus freedom from religion, as observed by former Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, Sandra Day O’Connor. In a case regarding the inclusion of the word God in the Pledge of Allegiance, O’Connor â€Å"asked whether the school’s pledge policy â€Å"sends a message to nonadherents that they are outsiders, not full members of the political community. And, in concluding that it does not, O’Connor emphasized that the pledge â€Å"has been employed pervasively without engendering significant controversy† and â€Å"caused no political divisiveness prior to the filing of this lawsuit. † (Garnett 2004). The Supreme Court justice tried to argue that a middle of the road approach, where those who disagreed with something simply chose not to participate, was appropriate. Unfortunately, this moderate approach was rejected by people on both sides of the issue. Instead of being happy with a compromise solution, it seems that people are more insistent on getting things their way. â€Å"More and more, our law seems suspicious of those divisions that our Constitution actually protects–that is, the divisions that result when free people contend over difficult questions that matter–yet indifferent to the harm done to religious freedom by demands for the privatization of faith and its segregation from civic life† (Garnett 2004). In this case, the author argued that removing God from the pledge was an imposition on the rights of the religious and the case had clearly claimed that the pledge’s use of â€Å"God† was an imposition on the rights of those with other or non-existent religious beliefs. Garnett and others seem more than willing to argue that the middle ground is not sufficient. All sides of an argument now claim moral superiority and believe that they must be given their way. This unfortunately contributes to a devisiveness from which the country cannot hope to recover.
